HIGH FLIER Lanzarote Arrivals Buck Canary Islands Trend

Tourist arrivals grew by 2.9% on Lanzarote in the nine months to September end, fuelled by growth in the British and Spanish markets…

Lanzarote welcomed nearly 50,000 more visitors during the first nine months of this year versus the same period in 2018. Making it the only Canary Island to record any real positive growth so far in 2019, with total arrivals up by 2.3%.

A total of 2.2 million tourists touched down at Arrecife airport during this period – 1.9 million of them arriving from foreign markets. And despite the spectre of Brexit the British market continued to expand during this period, with UK arrivals up by 4.6%. Whilst arrivals from Eire and France also increased by 9.8% and 1.2% respectively.

However other key foreign markets declined, with German arrivals down by 5.5%, Italian by 9.6% and the Dutch market declining by 20.7%. Resulting in sluggish overall growth amongst foreign markets of just 0.5%.

Arrivals from mainland Spain though have soared during this period, up by nearly 20%. As a total of 235,857 tourists from the peninsula visited Lanzarote.
