COURT OUT Fake Jet2 Insurance Claim Fails

A couple who claimed for gastric illness on a Jet2 holiday in Lanzarote now face legal action after a landmark court ruling last week…

Nottingham couple Karl and Laura Hughes visited Lanzarote in 2016, feigned gastric illness and filed an insurance claim against Jet2. However, this claim was subsequently withdrawn after footage on social media emerged of the happy holidaymakers enjoying a snorkelling trip.

As a result, Jet2 filed a counter action with the Court of Appeal, who last week ruled that the tour operator can now pursue legal action for contempt against the couple. A Jet2 spokesperson stated “this paves the way for companies to take action against dishonest claimants, even if they do not actually submit legal proceedings”.

According to ABTA, holiday insurance sickness claims rose 500% between 2014 and 2017, an increase fuelled largely by dubious cases according to leading tour operators.
