Free Covid Coverage For All Lanzarote Tourists

Tourists visiting Lanzarote are being given free insurance for their flights, accommodation and medical bills in the event of contracting Coronavirus….

The Canary Islands today announced an innovative new insurance policy that covers the medical bills, accommodation and flight costs of any tourist who contracts Coronavirus whilst visiting the archipelago.

The Canary Islands Government has taken out the policy with AXA insurance and it is effective as from today, covering all of the islands, including Lanzarote.

The coverage extends until October 31st 2021, no registration is necessary and the policy covers up €150,000 in health expenses and quarantine costs of €100 per day for 14 days.

Tourism Minister Yaiza Castilla stated, “The insurance policy we’ve subscribed covers all tourists who come to our islands. It means all holidaymakers, Spanish or foreign, can have any costs related to coronavirus covered, whether it be for medicines, repatriation or costs linked to any quarantine. It’s the result of an agreement with the multinational insurance specialist AXA. We are the first autonomous community which will guarantee travel cover for Covid-19. We believe this will definitely help the islands’ economic recovery.”

The initiative follows failed attempts to enforce a U turn by the UK Government on the addition of the Canaries to the current FCO no-fly list last week, which now encompasses all of Spain and its islands.

The insurance doesn’t cover anyone who contracts the virus prior to their arrival and importantly also only covers visitors staying in regulated and licensed tourist accommodation.
