UK Opens Air Travel Corridor to Lanzarote

The UK yesterday announced the creation of a safe air travel corridor to Lanzarote, effective from Sunday October 25th.

British tourists can now visit Lanzarote without invalidating their travel insurance or having to quarantine on their return to the UK. The announcement was made yesterday by Grant Shapps and covers all of the Canary Islands, as well as other destinations such as the Maldives.

An ABTA spokesperson stated: “After a terrible summer season, this is a bit of light at the end of a very dark tunnel. We have been highlighting the need to move to a regional approach to quarantine, citing the Canary Islands as a specific example, so it is good to see the Government take action. But we must remember that the pandemic brought foreign travel to a standstill and for most companies there has been little or no chance to start a recovery.”

In a further boost Germany, Lanzarote’s second largest tourist market announced a similar move, placing the Canary Islands on their safe travel list also.

Plans to introduce testing for tourists at both the point of departure and arrival have yet to be implemented, although already approved by the Spanish Government. With the latest reports suggesting that AENA, the Spanish airport authority, are in fact totally opposed to testing within their airports as this will create customer congestion.  Instead testing at hotel receptions may be intrdouced, according to The Sun - however plans to test guests staying in holiday rentals have yet to be outlined.
