Lanzarote´s Foreign Population Close To 30%

The British now form the largest national group of expatriates on Lanzarote, according to the latest statistics just released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics. Accounting for 5.48% of the islands total population of 141,427 people with a total of 7,761 residents. Whilst overall nearly 30% of Lanzarote´s residents are now non-Spanish nationals.

Nearly 30% of Lanzarote´s total population is comprised of non Spanish nationals according to the latest information released by ISTAC which was based on a survey conducted in 2010. With just over 39,000 official residents hailing from countries outside of Spain.

The British form the largest expatriate group with a total of 7,761 residents. Followed by Colombians (4,923), Germans (4321) and Moroccans (4276). With British and German residents chiefly concentrated in and around the three main tourist resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. And as their least dense in Arrecife, Tinajo and Haria.

In terms of the islands seven municipalities Arrecife remains the most densely populated area with resident numbers totalling 44,349 people. Whilst at the other end of the scale Haria in the north of the island is home to a population of just 4,316 residents.

Lanzarote is sometimes depicted as a retirement haven for foreigners. But in reality the age profile of most non Spanish nationals residing here is much lower. As according to the ISTAC statistics the concentration of non Spanish nationals is much higher in the 30 to 50 years age bracket than amongst the over 65´s.
