Puerto del Carmen Improvements Get Green Light

The second phase of improvements to Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote's largest and oldest tourist resort is set to get underway, with a range of measures to revitalize the infrastructure and modernise several establishments gaining approval in the Canarian Government last week.

€60 million will be used to fund several distinct projects, including remodelling some of the resort's hotels to achieve an upgrade in their star ratings. For example, the Hotel Sol Lanzarote, which currently only has one star, will be completely refurbished to become a four star establishment. Whilst the Hotel Los Fariones will be transformed from four to five stars.

The idea behind raising the standard in seven of Puerto del Carmen´s hotels is to ensure the resort maintains a competitive edge without having to extend the urban spread of the town, through the construction of new tourist accommodation.

The other main focal point of these proposed improvements are various public spaces, where new street furniture, signage and leisure areas are set to be developed. Another major aspect will be improving existing communication routes within the resort to ensure greater ease of access for both tourists and residents alike. The plans will now be made public and should be approved at the local level in the next three months.
