Camp Site At San Juan Closed This Easter

The campsite that borders the beach at San Juan in Famara will not be open to the public over the coming Easter period, according to an announcement made by the Ayuntamiento of Teguise yesterday.

The beach, which lies just outside the village of Caleta de Famara, has always been a popular spot for campers, especially during Easter week. However, recent changes to the demarcation of this public space mean that the Ayuntamiento cannot give authorization for the space to be used.

The area under discussion covers 16,000 square metres on the north western coastline and lies between Los Dises and Caleta de Famara. And has been the subject of a change in its boundaries due to an intervention by the Ministry of the Environment.

As a result of an investigation started in 2009, there has been a degree of uncertainty about the extent of the zone open to the public, in particular affecting an area stretching from the coastline towards the interior of the camping park.

And whilst discussions continue between the Ministry for the Environment and the Ayuntamiento, the latter has not been able to authorize the camping permits it usually has available.

Instead, it is hoped that the camp site at Papagayo, close to Playa Blanca in the south of the island, will be able to absorb the demand for camping spots over the Easter period. This camping site opens its doors on 15th April until 24th with pitches available from €4 per day for smaller spots and €7 per day for the larger pitches.
