The Spanish airport authority AENA has announced that it will maintain the current rate of reduced airport taxes and charges for the duration of 2010. An announcement that could have a profound impact for tourism on Lanzarote. As the low cost operators Ryanair may now extend their flights to Lanzarote beyond the end of March next year.

Ryanair had made it clear that the extension of their services beyond the end of March 2010 was partly dependent on the ongoing implementation of reduced taxes and charges by AENA. A move originally introduced earlier this year in order to help stimulate Spain’s struggling tourist sector.

Ryanair flights to the Lanzarote and the rest of the Canaries commenced last month. With the airline predicting that they would carry 2 million passengers to the archipelago across the course of this coming winter. Whilst creating 2,000 new jobs in the process.
