The number of tourists visiting Lanzarote fell by 18.07% in July versus 2008 figures. According to the latest statistics just released by AENA. A figure that is an improvement on June´s decline of 24.45% but which still very closely matches the total cumulative fall in visitor numbers to the island so far this year.
A total of 114,397 foreign tourists arrived on flights to Lanzarote last month, according to the airport authority AENA. Down from 139,625 visitors in July 2008.
The UK market, Lanzarote´s largest, continues to record the largest shortfalls. As the number of British tourists fell by 22.37%, from 77,746 visitors in July 2008 to 60,351 last month. Followed closely by Eire, with arrivals down 17.3% from 23,064 in July 2009 to 19,055 last month.
German visitor numbers however showed a less steep decline of just 7.68% in July versus previous months of this year. As the island welcomed a total of 17,385 holiday makers from Germany. But all other major national markets continue to remain in negative territory.
Cumulatively, foreign tourist numbers now stand at 18.05% down for the first seven months of this year. The British market shows a total shortfall of 20.39%, whilst the Irish and German markets are now down by 16.78% and 12.61% respectively.
